Srinagar History

Srinagar HistorySrinagar derives it name from the conjugation of two Sanskrit words, 'Sri' which means wealth and 'Nagar' which means city. It was King Pravarasena II who laid the foundation of the city about 2,000 years back. The city dates back to 3rd century BC and served as a part of the Mauryan Empire, one of the powerful dynasties of India. Under the reign of the Kushans in the 1st century, the entire region flourished by all leaps and bounds. During this perod, it was a premier Buddhist pilgrimage site but soon got merged with the Kingdom of Vikramadiya, the famous ruler of Ujjain in the 6th century.

The region continued to be under the reign of local Hindu rulers till 14th century. After that, it went under the control of Muslim rulers as soon as they invaded it. With the fall of Mughal Empire, the fate of the region also changed.

The year 1814 saw for the first time Sikhs taking over the reigns when Ranjit Singh became the sole ruler. But he had to undergo defeat by the British. As per the treaty of Lahore, Gulab Singh was appointed as the autonomous ruler of Kashmir in 1846. It was due to the effort of Hari Singh, the great grandson of Gulab Singh who in order to get rid of the intruders from across the border in 1948 got this huge state merged with India.
